the self-sustaining backyard kitchen garden aka the veggie patch

BIG DAYS IN THE KITCHEN GARDEN – closer to backyard self-sustainability!
(Today my readership exploded by 100%! I now have 2 subscribers! That’s big news in these early days of blogging. Thanks for the support, Bek and Michelle. I hope you find it all entertaining and informative and also that you feel welcome to contribute your own ideas.)
The veggie patch has had a population explosion too – I had some retail therapy at the local plantery yesterday to banish the blue Blahs and now there 3 eggplants, 2 rosemary, 3 lavenders, 1 thai chilli and a pineapple guava tree in addition.

It’s looking semi-professional now with the walking planks in place. And I’m including a photo of my bumper apple harvest – just wait till next year!

My postal deliveries today came thick and fast too! Heaps of mail including a book ordered over the internet coming from the UK.

My friend, Anna, put me onto this book which was written in 1985.

No doubt I’ll rabbit on about it at length sometime soon. Inside are pictures of real women in real sizes looking really glamorous and full of the joy of life. And it’s anti-dieting saying that dieting just doesn’t work. The hidden statistic (which she mentions) is that 95% of dieters put the weight back on.

Compare the shot of Nancy Roberts with this pic of Twiggy from the 60s,

the ideal skinny look for the swinging sixties

which was the time I was growing up, and this is the ideal we’ve been confronted with ever since. And my shape is just not like that. It never was. I suppose it could have been if I didn’t eat again but life’s too short!
We are the ones who must resist fashion harassment and grow comfortable in our skins. Rather paint than be painted!

In friendship,
N.
